The study was published in the journal Circulation, which also concluded that there is a strong link between long-term sleep issues and heart disease. The researchers of the study also highlighted that the need to “improve heart disease prevention efforts” in women is equally important in men.
It is to be noted that the number one cause of death among women in the United States is Heart Disease.
What did experts recommend?
A cardiologist with Austin Heart and Health Hospital of Austin – Dr Vivek Goswami addressed, “The takeaway message is to really focus on allowing ourselves 7 to 9 hours of sleep per night.”
“So if we go to bed at 11 with plans to wake up at 5:00, we’ve already put ourselves in a disadvantage. We’ve known for quite some time that patients that don’t get enough sleep oftentimes have higher incidence of high blood pressure. They have a higher incidence of inflammation, insulin resistance, which could lead to diabetes,” Goswami continued.

Further, he mentioned that following steps must be followed by a person having less sleep to improve the duration and quality of sleep. The steps were as follows:
- Make a routine: Try going to bed at the same time every night and waking up at the same time every morning
- Avoid alcohol and caffeine at night
- Don’t drink a lot of fluids right before bed
- Put screens away well before bedtime
- Make your room dark and quiet
